We like to keep things simple and follow the Scandinavian ethos of less is more. Rather than paint over our cracks, we celebrate them and prepare for healthier skin going forward. Here are our 5 important beauty tips, some of which occasionally get left out of our beauty routine – but are super important (and cheap!).
Cleansing with top brand springwater
One of the best pieces of advice we’ve ever been given is using springwater instead of tapwater to cleanse our face. The quality of tap water vary from country to country and area to area. In some parts of the United Kingdom drinking water from the tap is particularly hard on the skin.
It is not only the water itself, but also the products used to treat drinking water that can stay in the water. And the pipes through which the water travels that are not always clean.
So using good quality spring water – ie a recognised natural springwater – to wipe off cleansing milk is key. It is an extra effort, it’ll feel a little colder to the skin, but it will prove more than worth it. Using Vaseline (sparingly) – one of 5 important beauty tips
Vaseline is a heavy-duty creme, repairing cracked lips efficiently and quickly. As a top coat it acts as a sealant. It is particularly usefor for those aged 30+. Dubbing it gently with the tip of a finger on the skin under your eyes and round the edges of the lips – after cleansing at night – keeps the moisturiser in and dirt out.
Drinking freshly squeezed orange juice
Freshly squeezed orange juice is well-known for giving good skin and glow. But we mean really fresh oranges. And organic oranges – it is very easy to tell the difference between organic and non-organic oranges. Non-organic oranges are more watery.
And freshly squeezed at home or directly into your glass (not out of a bottle however freshly squeezed it says on the bottle). A glass a day over a period is not only a delicious way to improve your skin, but also provides vitamin C and colourful plant pigments to give a fresher complexion.
5 top tips for 20-somethings
- Cleanse your face using branded springwater (read more here) instead of tap water – every night
- Don’t rub the skin under your eyes when applying makeup
- Don’t start Botox yet
- Don’t over-pluck your eyebrows – eventually they don’t grow back
- Use upward movement on the face when wiping off cleanser (after years of pulling the skin down it creates lines and sags earlier)
Plucking nostril hairs with a tweezer
This may sound odd and painful (it is) and unnecessary even. But little hairs showing in the nose is a reminder of the ageing process. The little hairs in the nostrils are, of course, there for a reason: they help stop dust and other allergens from getting into your body and lungs. Therefore, they need to stay – most of them. But the ones that grow stronger and longer as we get older only help to make us look exactly that, older.
Applying eye make up with your fingertips
The skin around the eyes, particularly under the eyes, is the among thinnest and most sensitive on our body. It needs to be treated with extra care. Ironically, as we pile on layers of concealer, make up and powder to help us look younger, we speed up the ageing process of the skin.
Rubbing the area and pulling it in different directions – either with your fingers or sponges – helps fine lines to develop (when we’re young) and eventually wrinkles. DU rule no 1 in this area is to only ever tap it gently with a finger tip – it will take a little longer to apply make up but when you hit your 30s and 40s it will have been time and effort well spent.
